Corncockle has been associated with European agriculture for at least 4000 years. Harvested grains were often contaminated with the seeds of this poisonous annual plant. In the Middle Ages, it was known as 'hell corn' because of its toxicity. However, experiments have shown that wheat plants grown in the presence of corncockle are larger than those grown in its absence.
