Henri IV as Charlemagne

Francesco Bordoni1628/1633

Château de Fontainebleau

Château de Fontainebleau
Fontainebleau, France

In the Trinity Chapel, work on which commenced under François I and ended under Louis XIII, the altar and retable were designed by Italian sculptor Francesco Bordoni. This Italianate marble monument was decorated with a large Jean Dubois painting of the Holy Trinity at the moment of the Descent from the Cross (painted in 1642), four bronze angels and two marble statues. The one on the left represents Henri IV as Charlemagne, and that on the right depicts Louis XIII as Saint Louis. These works by Bordoni were made in honour of the two kings who strove to see the chapel completed.
