MORE OR LESS FUN
The entire party is thought to have joined the excursion to the monastery in Sohag. Henrik de Maré and Wilhelm von Geijer, who took the photograph, took this opportunity to have a bit of fun. It would appear that the donkey driver was in on the joke too. Ida Uhse describes the day. Her experience was not as jolly:
“Sohag, 4th of Jan. Arrived at 11am and immediately went for a ride to visit two monasteries. We rode for three hours and on the way back I lost my beautiful watch, the one I received as a gift from the Countess last Christmas. I was devastated to have lost it, as I loved the watch so dearly. The Countess promised to give me a new watch and asked me not to let this loss ruin the excursion for me. But I am still quite sad, as the watch was very dear to me. Today we arrived at Akhmim, where we shall stay overnight, an important city with close to 10,000 inhabitants, great cotton and shawl weaving mills, bazaars and a very popular weekly market.
You are all set!
