Carte de visite of Henry Monroe, a laborer from New Bedford, Massachusetts and 54th Regiment drummer. Monroe claimed that he was 18 at the time of his enlistment. He was more likely about 13 years old. He joined the 54th Massachusetts Regiment on February 25, 1863 and was discharged on August 20, 1865. After the war, Monroe earned a divinity degree and became pastor of St. Mark’s Methodist Episcopal Church in New York City. His son published Monroe's memories of the "Old 54th" Regiment in a series of church bulletins.
