In October 1908, in a resplendent folio printed on heavy, glossy paper, the illustrated periodical, Country Life (est. 1897), published two articles to mark the completion of the Portman’s Formal Garden. 'Hestercombe I’ by long time architectural editor, Henry Avray Tipping, featured a nine-page write up with no less than eleven large black-and-white photographs of the gardens and Edwin Lutyens’ ‘Wrennaissance’ orangery. Three of the photos took up an entire page!
