The Gepang Gath Glacier (seen in the image) and its proglacial lake are situated at an altitude of 14000 feet, in the Chandra basin, Himachal Pradesh. Over the last 40 years, the lake volume has increased by over 20 times due to melting and calving glacier fragments. This Proglacial lake is a potential candidate for a Glacial Lake outburst flood (GLOF) event and can threaten several villages downstream and also the National Highway connecting Manali to Leh. Glaciologists are regularly monitoring the changes happening on this glacier and the proglacial lake due to increasing temperatures.
