Hessmobil racing car

Hessc. 1910

State Library of South Australia

State Library of South Australia
Adelaide, Australia

Hessmobil racing car with driver with additional marking of 'JLH' on rear. The Hess monogrammed 'H' can been seen below the passenger seat. There are holes for two flags, which are missing, at the front of the bonnet.

The crank turns a heavy flywheel which drives the front wheels of the car. It can be started or stopped by using the steering wheel. This was the favoured Hess mechanism for driving its toys.

Mattheus Hess founded his toy manufacturing business in Nuremberg, Germany, in 1826. The company's toys are notable for their degree of decoration and for the flywheel mechanism. The company ceased manufacturing in 1934.
