The Heveningham family held the manor from the early 13th century. John Bence bought the estate in circa 1700 and built a new house and laid out a wilderness garden. A new owner, Sir Joshua Vanneck, acquired further parkland. His son Gerald rebuilt the house and commissioned Lancelot 'Capability' Brown to landscape the park, although few of the plans were implemented. However, a number of Brown's ploposals were included in a programme of restoration in the late 20th century.
