Hewell Grange landscape park was laid out in the mid 18th century for the Earls of Plymouth by William Shenstone and Lancelot 'Capability' Brown. It was redesigned in 1812 by Humphry Repton and altered again in the late 19th century and early 20th century.

During the Second World War the house and grounds were used by the Royal Ordnance Corps. It was then sold with much of the estate coming into the possession of HM Prison Service.
