In 1793 James Monroe purchased 1000 acres of land next to Thomas Jefferson's Monticello. Monroe eventually expanded his "Highland" to 3500 acres. Today James Monroe's Highland is a 535 acre property dedicated to preserving the legacy of the fifth President of the United States.
