Hilya al-nabi (A Description of the Prophet)

Hâfiz Osman1691 (AH 1103)

Chester Beatty

Chester Beatty
Dublin, Ireland

The text of this hilya has been copied by the renowned Turkish calligrapher Hafiz Osman, who has signed his name and given the year in which he worked, in the last two lines of text. The wide band of green and gold floral decoration that surrounds the hilya was probably added about a century after Hafiz Osman wrote the text, an indication of the regard in which his work continued to be held long after his death.
