On the morning of the marriage, female friends apply ocher and perfumed butterfat to the bride, who wears the traditional ekori headdress. She is considered an outsider in her husband’s clan until several months after the wedding, when the old ocher is ritually scraped from her face and body, representing the end of her former life.
