In Ancient Egypt, hippopotamuses abounded in and around the River Nile. As a denizen of the river, the hippopotamus was a symbol of fertility and new life. This figurine once stood in a grave. The Egyptians were afraid that it might come to life and attack the owner of the grave. To prevent this, they broke a piece off one of its legs, as is clearly visible in this figurine.
