The City of Goiás was the former capital of Goiás State until Goiânia (300 km away from Brasília, the country’s capital) took its place, in 1933. The small town stands still at the foothill of Serra Dourada State Park. The city preserves many of its constructions from the 18th century along the Rio Vermelho (Red River).
It was established by explorers, called Bandeirantes, who came from São Paulo to conquer the center of the country.
