Written at the time of the Conquest of New France, this critical and often partisan history was one of the first narratives to document this key period. Louis-Léonard Aumasson de Courville (about 1722-1782), known to be unpleasant and vindictive, probably refrained from signing his account out of a fear of reprisals. Only in 1940 did scholar Aegidius Fauteux finally identify Aumasson de Courville himself as the author!
