Built in 1926, the village of Anipemza has been enlarged in 1938 when it was promoted to an "urban type town" and reached 3.000 inhabitants. They had a special status as the area was off limits during the Soviet regime due to the vicinity of the Turkish border. Today, the village is impoverished, even forgotten: The mine closed in 1994, residents lost their jobs and now live in misery.
