This hoard of silver was discovered during the digging of a field in the north of the East Prussian village of Skomentnen. According to its discoverers, the silver spiral bracelet, the two bracelets and the thirteen silver ingots were inside a pot, which was broken during the digging. In 1929, a copper kettle with burned bones and pieces of silver jewellery was found only a few hundred metres to the southwest of this site, during the opening up of a stack of sugar beet. This find was exhibited at the Königsberger Prussia-Museum, and has been lost since the end of the Second World War. While the 1929 find has been interpreted as the grave of a wealthy Sudovian princess, the silver ingots in the ensemble of artefacts displayed here suggest a hoard hidden during uncertain times. (HN)
