Angus Taylor’s Holderstebolder evolves the tradition of figurative sculpture through a meticulous attention to craft and ambitious scale. It features a body that has been turned upside down and at over 6 metres tall, inverts the viewer’s relationship with most sculpture: instead of the viewer dominating an upright figure, an upside-down figure dominates the viewer. Holderstebolder is made from Belfast Gabbro granite formed during the Precambrian period. This period is the earliest part of Earth’s history, which ended some 540 million years ago but stretches as far back as 4.6 billion years. Holderstebolder is unique in this regard as many of the works on display in the Sculpture Garden have been created from materials recently processed or fabricated.
