This image was acquired on Dec. 26, 2013 by the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on the NASA-NOAA Suomi NPP satellite. When compared an image of the same area taken in July, the differences in the amount of nighttime light around urban areas in Texas and Louisiana reflects the increase in winter holiday lights, which can be as much as 20-50 in major U.S. cities.
