Luca Cambiasocirca 1578

Cambiaso was the leading artist of Genoa in the 16th century. A number of his later works are nocturnal scenes, where the figures are defined by the flickering highlights from a single candle in an otherwise penumbrous setting. He painted several variants of the Holy Family in this manner. It would be almost another half century before the idea caught on among the northern followers of Caravaggio.
