Description: Homenaje a Picasso: Las Verdaderas Damas de Aviñon, which was included in the Pan American Union exhibition Tribute to Picasso, held months after the Spaniard’s death in 1973. Cuevas’ work consists of three drawings inspired by Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d’Avignon (1907; Museum of Modern Art, New York), Family of the Saltimbanques (1905; National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.), and other works from his early career. A fascination with prostitutes, circus performers, and other outsiders clearly engaged both artists, and each developed a distinctive stylistic approach to representing the grotesque and misshapen. -Text by Mark Andrew White
