MU chose to produce a mural as a tribute to novelist, essayist and scenarist Mordecai Richler for his 15th death anniversary and 85th birthday. Richler wrote 10 novels, including Cocksure and St. Urbain’s Horseman which both received the Governor General’s Awards. He also wrote several scenarios and children’s books such as the Jacob Two-Two collection, which also received many distinctions. Richler was also made Companion of the Order of Canada in 2001.

The mural is located at 19 Laurier West avenue, just next to Saint-Urbain street, where Mordecai Richler grew up and where many of his novels are set. The Mile-End Library, which bears his name since March 2015, is also located close on Parc avenue.

The artists chosen for the project were illustrators and painters Dominique Desbiens and Bruno Rouyère. Many comics, paintings and murals have been produced by the duo through the years.

The mural is part of the Montreal’s Great Artists collection, which highlights the creative minds and forces who have made outstanding contributions to the local, national and international reach of Montreal’s cultural scene. The murals pay tribute to creators in a variety of artistic disciplines who are either from the city originally, or who have made it their home.
