This lithograph commemorates the life of abolitionist and activist Frederick Douglass (c.1817-1895). Through his books, newspapers, speeches, and travels, Douglass became a brilliant oratorical and literary crusader for abolition as well as women’s rights and one of the most well known men in America. He advised President Abraham Lincoln and served as a recruiter for the 54th and 55th Massachusetts Regiments, which his sons, Lewis and Charles joined. Following the War, Douglass continued to be involved in the Republican Party and served as an ambassador to Haiti, all the while continuing to advocate for the rights of African Americans and women.
