Since his childhood, Eugène Boudin had been acquainted with Honfleur, the port located opposite Le Havre in the estuary of the Seine. In his emphasis on the harbor architecture with the stone quayside, he found a modern approach: Boudin presented the harbor as a hub for the transferal of merchandise and a station for travelers, demonstrating how goods were sent from Rouen via Honfleur to England.
