This placard was carried during the memorial march in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., held on April 8, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee. On March 29, 1968, King went to Memphis in support of the black sanitary public works employees, who had been on strike for higher wages and better treatment.
On April 3, King delivered his "I’ve Been to the Mountaintop" address at Mason Temple. On April 4th,1968 he was shot while standing on the second-floor balcony of the Lorraine Motel.
