Honorary cupboard for Mór Jókai to the 50 year jubilee of his writing carrer

Ornamental cabinet of drawings, a piece of furniture dedicated to Jókai, 1893; Designer: Antal Schickedanz (1846–1915), architect, Realisation: Jenő Fischhof (1870–1953), leather craftsman and artist; Materials: oak, mahogany, leather, wrought iron This unique furniture is dedicated to and planned for Mór Jókai (1825–1904), the most popular Hungarian writer in the 19th century. It was made in 1893, for holding contemporary artists’ graphics given for the 50 year jubilee of his writing career. The furniture was designed byAntal Schickedanz, an architect and realised by Jenő Fischhof (1870–1953), a leather craftsman and artist. The furniture reminiscent of gothic forms consists of three parts: table, cabinet and the upper part. The table-top is held by two carved footings cut out in an ogee arch shape at the bottom. There is a gothic scroll on the brim of the table. The cabinet with two doors is decorated with a wrought iron band and eight strap-hinges ending in lilies. The steep, roof shaped upper part is iron framed with an iron corolla with lilies. The upper part serves as a reading desk, the reader may contemplate the works of art at eye-level leaning them to the side of the upper part. In the middle of the embossed, leather coated cover there is a dedication: “For Jókai – the Hungarian artists”. On both sides of the text there are the figures of the jubilee year: “1843 – 1893”. A bútor a legnépszerűbb 19. századi magyar író, Jókai Mór (1825–1904) számára tervezett egyedi, dedikált bútordarab. 1893-ban készült, Jókai 50 éves írói jubileumára ajándékozott kortárs képzőművészek grafikáinak tárolására. A bútort Schickedanz Antal építész tervezte és Fischhof Jenő (1870–1953) bőrdíszműves, iparművész kivitelezte. A gótikus formákat idéző bútor három részből áll: asztal, szekrény és tetőzet. Az asztallapot két faragott, alul szamárhát-ívben kivágott lábazat tartja. Az asztal káváján gótikus faragott indafonadék látható. A két ajtós szekrény kovácsoltvas szalaggal és nyolc liliomos végződésű sarokpánttal díszített. A meredek, háztető alakú felső rész vas keretbe van foglalva, oromzatán liliomos vaspárta. A tetőzet olvasópultnak szolgál, oldalához támasztva lehet az ajándékba kapott képzőművészeti alkotásokat szemmagasságban szemlélni. A dombornyomásos, sötét bőrrel borított tetőlap közepén dedikáció olvasható: „Jókainak a magyar képzőművészek”. A szöveg két oldalán a jubileumi évszámok állnak: „1843–1893”.
