The Dent Hardware Company of Fullerton, Pennsylvania, was among the first companies to start manufacturing cast-aluminum toys, and also one of the first to stop. Henry Dent and four other partners founded Dent Hardware in 1894. Creating their first cast-iron toys in 1898, the company quickly became known for quality and design. Dent began producing cast-aluminum toys in 1929 but stopped after 1930. Materials were expensive, and manufacturing proved more difficult than the company had anticipated. Hoping that the lighter weight would attract the interest of retailers interested in reducing shipping costs, it never occurred to the Dent Company that consumers might not have any interest in the new material. In a market built for decades on cast-iron toys, the lighter aluminum versions never caught on. Unable to keep pace with the competition, Dent stopped making toys altogether in 1937.
