Leiden, Netherlands

With a cross-section of almost six centimetres, these two hoop earrings are among the largest ever found. The two fashioned in the shape of bulls’ heads are of more modest dimensions. The hoops are decorated with gold thread. The heads display the clear influence of Persian architecture, in which bulls’ heads play a prominent role. When the rings are worn in the ear, the decorated part hangs upside down.
