Clarence Mulford's character Hopalong Cassidy appeared in a series of cowboy adventures. Here, Schoonover shows the shortened leg that gave Hopalong his nickname. The weather-beaten and cantankerous cowboy was transformed into a suavely handsome figure in his later Hollywood film and television persona.

After his study with Howard Pyle, New Jersey native Frank Schoonover lived and worked in Wilmington throughout his career. He was a founding member of the Wilmington Society of the Fine Arts, which became the Delaware Art Museum.
