Horizons

Horizons (Horizontes) is an installation made up of a series of flags that hung from the ceiling. During its presentation at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, the flags fluttered in zigzagging rows from the ceilings of the corridors on the museum’s third floor. It was constituted there as a single piece and acquired the nature of a specific intervention without losing its potential as an extendible architectural device that could be relocated in other places. Horizons, 2001–07, was based on numerous anagrams for the cultural and political institutions and associations Eduardo Chillida designed. The first of the six repeated motifs recreates Chillida’s manner of drawing. The second reproduces the emblematic sculpture Wind Comb (El peine del viento) in high contrast. The four other images reinterpret Chillida’s old designs for causes as diverse as anti-nuclear committees, the University of the Basque Country and Bilbao 700, next to others that have already fallen into disuse and a few reinvented ones.
