This sundial was manufactured in the early 18th century by the Royal Astronomical Bureau and modeled after a sundail of the Chinese Ming Dynasty. It has the inscription “Horizontal Sundial, 37°39´15˝ North of Hanyang,”, which suggests that this sundial was created with 37°39´15˝ N of Hanyang as a reference. The altitude was measured at Jongno in 1713, the 39th year of King Sukjong’s reign, and before then, 37°20´had been used.
