Horn

As a musical instrument, the horn derives its name fromthe horns of cattle. Horns and tusks were hollowed out to make them into wind instruments. Sometimes, horns were made of leather, earthenware or thin sheets of metal.
Most horns were used to give each other signals. This signalling function was important during hunting and during sailing in foggy conditions. However, drinking horns and ink horns are also found in the Middle Ages.Well-known are the pilgrimhorns, used by the faithful to underscore religious moments.
Horns were carried around on a belt or hooked onto horse trappings or on a ship’s rigging. This large specimen is made of a folded and soldered sheet of copper and has a mounted mouth. The horn was dredged up from the river Meuse. Possibly, it was thrown into the water as a votive offering, but it may also have fallen from a ship or from a tower.
