Ross House was the birthplace of Violet Florence Martin (1862-1914), co-author with Edith Somerville of Through Connemara in a Governess Cart (1893). A governess cart, pictured here, was typically a light, relatively safe carriage drawn by a well-tempered cob, and handled by a lady, particularly a governess while conveying the children in her care.
