Beginning in 1852, Chicago's public transportation relied on horse-drawn carriages called omnibuses. After the introduction of street railways in 1859, omnibuses became rail-compatible as steel wheels replaced wooden ones. By the 1890s, transportation officials had converted many of the city's horsecar lines into cable cars or electric trolleys.
