Museum of the Sakitama Ancient Burial Mounds
Saitama prefecture , Japan

This haniwa depicts a decorated horse with round, open eyes and a large mane wearing an extravagant harness. There is a bit and bridle in a lowercase-f shape by the mouth as well as bells attached to the martingale and three-belled gyōyō (apricot-leaf-shaped decorations) on the crupper. There are also saddle flaps and stirrups hanging below the saddle to guard against mud. This haniwa is a valuable artifact for understanding how horse harnesses were used.
