A founder member of the Society of Contemporary Artists in Calcutta, Sunil Das was known for his energetic charcoal drawings of horses and the bullfights he observed in Spain.
A recipient of the Padma Shri award, Sunil Das was born to a middle-class family. A scholarship to a French art school, the École Nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts, allowed him to tour Europe. He worked mainly with soft muted colours and was inspired by what he saw around him at the time.
