Horseneck Brook is located on what was the Twachtman property in Greenwich, Connecticut. He settled in Greenwich in 1889, finding it suitable as being close both to New York and his good friend and fellow artist J. Alden Weir, and providing marvelous natural landscapes to paint. The brook itself with its "bending, curving, and deepening into pools" was a particularly attractive feature for Twachtman. Horseneck Brook provided Twachtman with subject matter for a number of paintings. He painted it in different seasons and from different locations, although winter landscapes are most numerous.
