Parma, Italy

The work is dedicated to the motif of the horses run amok during the storm, frequent during the last period of Ligabue's activity, both in association with the theme of ploughing, as in this case, and connected to the carriage ride. The two animals, the first with a dark and low tail, the second with a clear and high tail, are depicted with their front paws raised; the two men, one from behind with a scarf blowing in the wind, the other facing wearing a waistcoat closed by large buttons, appear with their arms raised; the dog is about to leap towards the horses; rain is defined, as lightning flashes across the sky in the upper right; the landscape is enclosed by a group of Swiss houses in the background. The landscape is rendered with chromatic vivacity, obtained through the contrast between the intense green of the meadows and the bright yellow of the wheat fields.
