P. Domšaitis commenced his studies in art quite late – up to the age of 27 he worked on his parents’ farm. Understandably, the painter’s early canvases frequently portray images of his birthplace and peasant life. They include the shores of the Curonian Lagoon, fishing boats, farmsteads amid deep greenery, peasants working the fields, cows grazing in the meadows and horses. These were a particular favourite of P. Domšaitis, starting from his first compositions depicting the Trakėnai breed of horses that were removed from Eastern Prussia and ending with the symbolic horse and rider motif in paintings from his African period.
