The renowned Dutch botanist Nikolaus Joseph Freiherr von Jacquin (1727-1817), who later became director of the Imperial Botanical Garden in Schönbrunn, was part of a highly successful four-year expedition to the Caribbean. He devoted a separate treatise to the collections of the Vienna Garden, which he helped to propagate. The volume contains a total of 300 coloured copper engravings by Frances von Scheidel.
