Hot Buttered Derek Hynd model twin fin top view

In the late 1970s and early ‘80s, Derek Hynd was part of a new wave of young Sydney surfers taking on the established professionals. He finished a career-high seventh on the pro world tour in 1981, a year after he was blinded in one eye when he was struck by his board during a competition in South Africa. Derek was a team rider for Hot Buttered/Terry Fitzgerald and this board is a combination of high performance twin fin design and Fitzgerald's refined Hawaiian speed elements. Based on the boards Derek rode regularly, this is a Derek Hynd "model" owned by the man himself and that he said it is "the best board of my life, period". After retiring from the pro tour aged 25, Derek became a coach for a number of other younger pros, an articulate and outspoken writer for a number of surf magazines, and worked in marketing for Rip Curl. Early in the new millennium, Derek began experimenting with finless boards that he continues to ride.
