The two retable sides are straight, with curving tops both are divided by volute pairs at the bottom and top. The middle picture of the Calvary is made of inlaid marble and semi-precious stones, and enclosed by twin columns. There is an inscription in a cartouche under the Calvary-scene, referring to the mercy of the Almighty and the sacrifice of Christ: "PROPRIO FILIO NON PEPERCI(T), SED PRO OMNIBUS TRADIDI(T) ILLUM". (cf. St. Paul's Letter to the Romans, 8:32 "He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all.") The rich decoration consists of garlands of fruits, stylized foliage and flowers and volutes.
