House of Albert Dürer, Nuremberg

The aspect from east or northeast came to be established as the canonical view of the Dürer House. From this angle, both sides of the house could be shown. The Tiergärtnertor, the city wall, and the fortification tower halfway along torward fhe Neutor delimit the composition on the right and bind the houseof the artist into a medieval ensemble. Carts were popular incidental details. They reflected the every-day reality of the heavily trafficked gateway.
