In 1840/1841 the Ruskins undertake a tour of France, Italy and Switzerland. After spending most of December in Rome they arrive in Naples on the 9th January 1841 and stay until 25 February. In his diary for this time Ruskin keeps a detailed record of his travels in and around Naples and makes frequent mention of Vesuvius. His first impressions of Naples are noted in his diary entry for 10 February " I am not sure, on the whole, however that I am not a little disappointed in Naples… but the weather is bad and I will not judge yet", and although he enjoys the views and surrounding area the city does not improve in his estimation. He returned to Naples in 1874 stopping briefly before sailing to Palermo.
