How Dirty Is Your Glossy Black

For 'Techtonic' Mohammed Qasim Ashfaq presented 'How Dirty Is Your Glossy Black', one of a series of wall drawings based on Islamic ornamental patterns found in mosques and on metal screens, ceramics and textiles. Works in this series vary in size according the space in which they are installed, folding around corners and stretching across architectural features.

Evidencing the importance of light - it's, descending, expanding and infinite nature – within the artist's practice, the work is executed in an aluminium tape that turns its surface of application into a mirror. By incorporating the reflection of its surroundings Ashfaq's drawing becomes dislocated from its supporting structure. The work's diaphonous surface challenges the viewer's perception of depth, gesturing towards infinity.

Mohammed Qasim Ashfaq (b. 1982, Falkirk) is an artist living and working in London. He received his MA in Fine Art from Slade School of Fine Art, London and his BA in Fine Art from Grays School of Art, Aberdeen.
