Hudswell Clarke steam locomotive ‘Elizabeth’

0-4-0 Hudswell Clarke 'Irlam' class standard gauge saddletank locomotive named 'Elizabeth'. Brown and red livery, engine no. 688.

Elizabeth is a four-coupled saddle tank, i.e. has four driving wheels and a water tank slung over the boiler, and has two cylinders 14" diameter by 22" stroke. She was fitted to burn wool grease, an extracted product of effluent. This was the first successful attempt to use this fuel. 'Elizabeth was one of the last engines built by Hudswell Clarke before it closed in 1972.

Elizabeth was delivered to Esholt Sewage works on 27th October 1958. She was named after the Queen and was used to haul waste products up until 1978.
