Museum of the Sakitama Ancient Burial Mounds

Museum of the Sakitama Ancient Burial Mounds
Saitama prefecture , Japan

This haniwa depicts a female, because it has traces of a detached Shimada hairstyle (a Japanese women’s chignon-like hairstyle) on its head. She has a long nose, and her carved eyes are slightly slanted downward, giving the impression that she is smiling kindly. Her chin was constructed by adding extra clay to the existing face, and her ears are depicted as circles on the side of her head.
