This haniwa depicts a soldier wearing a mabisashi-tsuki kabuto, a type of helmet used during the Kofun Period that had a large visor attached to the front of a semicircular helmet crown. The crown, though made of clay, depicts what would be multiple iron plates held together by fasteners (the round bumps) in actual use. There were also pieces of haniwa depicting armor found in the same area as this figure, so it is thought these haniwa were made as a set.
