This is a human-shaped haniwa holding a shield. The shield is made from oblong clay tablets attached to the body of the cylinder. The figure is wearing a hat called kōgaibō, whose shape makes it appear that sticks are piercing the head, and has traces of earrings that once existed. The figure’s placid facial expression is characteristic of haniwa.
