Hunters on Horseback

late 700's - 800's

The Byzantine theme of the hunt is depicted with archers on horseback and the game beneath. The colors and border decorations are very similar to the adjacent Alexander the Great roundel (1959.123), indicating they were woven either in the same workshop or copying a fashion. The archers face each other because the design was based on costlier Byzantine silks with mirror-image symmetry.
